The company was formed in 1981 by Wolf Hoffman and was known as Hoffman Flugzeugbau producing its first aircraft, a motor glider, the HK36 Dimona which proved to be a commercial success.

After a number of changes of ownership and re-naming it became Diamond Aircraft Industries in 1998 by which time it was producing the Diamond DA20 light single and the Diamond DA40 was in development.

In 2004 Diamond introduced the DA42 Twin Star, its first twin aircraft. This aircraft became popular with both private and government operators, the aircraft was developed into the MALE unmanned aerial vehicle.

The DA62 started development in 2012 with the first version being called the DA52. The first production aircraft, now named the DA62 started production in June 2014, the aircraft being powered by two Austro AE300 Deisel engines.
